Ethan, an ex-con, is transplanted back into his rural Iowa hometown to start life all over again after being released from prison. He tries to move on with life as best he can and build a relationship with a daughter, Mary, who was born while he was on the inside. Trying to find work and regain the trust of the unwelcoming community only adds to Ethan's uncertain feelings of living life in the free world. Once settled he meets Naomi, a local who he opens up to about his life and the problems he is now facing. Naomi tries to befriend him and show him that no one is without their share of problems. But a vengeful, controlling Sheriff, and the peering, vindictive eyes of small town paranoia keep Ethan and his family on constant edge. With the Sheriff willing to stop at nothing to make life on the outside nothing but a living hell for him, Ethan tries desperately to keep his family safe and intact, while trying to hang on to his own sanity.
